My unique approach will be customized to your needs and will integrate Emotion-Focused Therapy with anger management.
For Individuals:
As a Certified Anger Management Facilitator, and a Marriage and Family Therapist with training in Emotionally-Focused Therapy, I provide a unique integrated approach to anger that is much more than psycho-educational. You will benefit from exploring and processing emotions hidden behind anger. You will also begin to heal from the effects of past hurts, the ones that you may not realize are controlling your present reactions. Complementary to this program are other techniques such as building your emotional intelligence, assertiveness training, Cognitive-behavioural therapy, and more. Whether you want to overcome anger in order to build better relationships, or you need it as part of an unfortunate legal proceeding, the changes you make through this program will help you build useful life skills that will positively impact your life.
Anger management also improves physical health. Cardiologist Patricia P. Chang, MD, with the John Hopkins Institute, reports on the negative effects of anger, and the positive effects of anger management: "In this study, hot tempers predicted disease long before other traditional risk factors like diabetes and hypertension became apparent... The most important thing angry young men can do is get professional help to manage their tempers, especially since previous studies have shown that those who already had heart disease got better with anger management" (qtd. in Cardiovascular News, http://circ.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/105/17/e9191).
For Couples:
By integrating Emotionally-Focused Therapy with anger management, couples will discover destructive patterns behind the anger and stress that both of you may be experiencing in your relationship. Emotionally-Focused Therapy will help you grow in understanding and empathy with one another. This will help you use healthy communication and enhance the development of mutual respect, trust, and acceptance as opposed to aggressive and negative interpersonal interactions.
Couples who attend this anger management program also learn conflict resolution skills, and grow in understanding and empathy toward each other. Anger management for couples improves both the physical and the emotional health of their relationship.
For Families:
Families benefit from one or more family members together receiving anger management integrated with Emotionally-Focused Family Therapy. Just as for couples, family members will also discover destructive patterns and will learn to grow in empathy and understanding toward each other. Parents and their children can be seen together and/or separately, depending on the needs of the family.
For Groups:
Anger management in groups creates an environment of both support and accountability. It gives individuals an opportunity for re-socialization by practicing their responses to frustration, stress, and negative primary emotions in a controlled setting. Anger management in groups also provides knowledge, community, and time to process the dynamics of anger. Self-esteem increases in individuals as members of the group help others in their struggles. (The next anger management program for groups is expected to begin in the fall.)
